Counting down to Gourmet Escape!
Live music, local heroes and fun foodie activities to make this year’s Gourmet Village the best fun yet!
Live music and even more entertainment will be a feature of the Gourmet Village at this year’s Margaret River Gourmet Escape presented by Audi and with the music, food, drinks and talent line up just announced, the feel-good vibes will be free flowing!
At the end of each day at the Village, guests can enjoy some great live DJ performances. Hugo Gruzman (Flight Facilities, Future Classic) drops into the main stage on Saturday and Sunday delivering a silky DJ set to round out each glorious day on the lawn at Leeuwin Estate. On Saturday he’ll also be joined by his great mate and party collaborator Tom Tilley (Triple J) to shake out your afternoon’s eating and drinking on the grassy dance floor.
The music won’t stop there for those who want to kick on beachside! On Sunday, WA’s own San Cisco headline the festival Closing Party at White Elephant Café with a special DJ set as the sun goes down over the Indian Ocean and another Gourmet Escape Festival. The much-loved Fremantle-based indie pop outfit will put down their instruments and take on the turntables for the final party of the weekend.
Resident DJ Greg Sara will be on the decks across the weekend keeping the Leeuwin Estate lawns humming.
In between tunes, TV personality and comedian Matt Okine (The Other Guy, Shortcuts to Glory) will entertain and host the free main stage events, which feature another first for 2017 – Jack Stein (Born to Cook) and world surfing legend Taj Burrow presenting the best of ‘after surf food’ paired with brews from Honest Ale. Honest Ale is Taj’s own label launched earlier this year with surfing mates Dino Adrian and Jay Davies. The lads will bring their international travels to the stage using local produce to create global favourites with a local twist.
Gourmet Escape’s limited-edition gin collaboration with Margaret River Distilling Co was such a success last year, that they’re back – and bringing their Giniversity with them! Award-winning bartender Vijay Mudaliar (Native, Singapore) has been scheming at the still with Margaret River Distilling Company to create a new official Gourmet Escape gin to be sold exclusively at the Village. It sold out last year so we’d advise getting in quick! You can also learn how to blend your own at the pop-up Giniversity Masterclass and discover your perfect pairing with the premium Fever-Tree range. See Ticketek for details.
New for 2017, dip even deeper into great hands-on opportunities with Black Swan Beta, the creative dip laboratory. Take a seat at the Taste Train conveyor bar and try five new mouth-watering dip creations, inspired by WA and made exclusively for Gourmet Escape. Each day, two of Gourmet Escape’s resident chefs will be on-site to deliver recipe creation masterclasses, showcasing the versatility and depth of the Black Swan dip range.
The Gourmet Village restaurant line up is looking tasty this year and will enable guests to take themselves on a degustation from Perth to the South West and the Great Southern! For $8 to $12 per dish, try delicious plates from:
- Lucky Chan’s (Perth) – new for 2017
- Má Là Dumplings – new for 2017
- Young George Bar & Kitchen (East Fremantle)
- Rivendell Restaurant (Yallingup)
- Rustico at Hayshed Hill (Wilyabrup)
- Leeuwin Estate (Margaret River)
- Xanadu Wines (Margaret River)
- Linley Valley Pork (Great Southern)
- Due South (Albany)
There are still places available at some sessions for new Village event The World’s Best Chef’s Table. This is an incredible opportunity for foodies to meet and eat with some of the World’s Top 50 Chefs. Hosted by Jill Dupleix, guests can pull up a stool and savour a glass of the region’s best wine alongside some of the world’s most coveted chefs – including 2017 Best Female Chef Ana Ros, David Thompson and Ashley Palmer-Watts as they create a dish showcasing incredible WA produce. Once the masterpiece is complete, the lucky group will enjoy the meal alongside their culinary idols. See the website for ticket availability.
On the event website you’ll now find timetables for many of the events happening within the Village, including Book Signings presented by Margaret River BookShop, Battle of the Breweries presented by Mane Liquor, WÜSTHOF Knife Skillery, and Meat & Livestock Australia presents the Butcher’s Block in association with Food Network hosted by Andy & Ben with a special appearance by Roger Mooking.
Kids under 12 receive free entry to the Gourmet Village all weekend – another first – and there’ll be plenty of activities to keep them amused. The Kids Corner will be jam-packed with educational foodie entertainment.
Gourmet Escape is one of WA’s favourite events, winning two awards at last year’s Australian Event Awards for Best Tourism Event – WA and Best Regional Event – WA. The festival has just been named a finalist in the WA Tourism Awards in the categories of Festivals & Events and Destination Marketing.
